Interior

- Airline cargo handlers use the 747-400’s lower-lobe cargo handling system to load or unload more than 65,000 pounds (30,000 kg) of cargo - the equivalent of 625 pieces of luggage combined with 20 tons of revenue freight - in less than 15 minutes.
- The Wright Brothers’ first flight at Kitty Hawk, N.C., could have been performed within the 150-foot (45-m) economy section of a 747-400.

Origins
- Pan American World Airways launched the programme in 1966 with an order for 25 aircraft at about $20 million each.
- The first 747 was rolled out of the Everett factory on 30 September 1968 and made its first flight on 9 February 1969.
- It entered airline service with Pan Am on 22 January 1970, on the New York to London route.
- Chief engineer Joe Sutter is known as the father of the 747. He died in 2016 at the age of 95.
- The team that took the aircraft from go-ahead to rollout in 29 months became known inside Boeing as “The Incredibles”.
- The famous hump is a side effect of freight. Boeing expected supersonic airliners to take over passenger flying, so the flight deck was raised out of the way to let the entire nose swing upwards for cargo loading.
The factory
- The Everett factory was built in 1967 for one purpose: to assemble the 747.
- At roughly 472 million cubic feet (13.3 million m³) it is still the largest building in the world by volume.
- It covers about 98 acres (40 hectares) — enough to park every 747 ever built inside, several times over.
Records
- The most people ever carried on an airliner flew aboard an El Al 747 during Operation Solomon in May 1991, evacuating Ethiopian Jews to Israel. The figure is officially recorded as 1,088, including two babies born during the flight; some accounts put it higher still.
- The longest non-stop flight by a 747 was a delivery flight. On 16–17 August 1989 the Qantas 747-400 City of Canberra (VH-OJA) flew London to Sydney non-stop in 20 hours and 9 minutes, covering about 17,000 km (9,200 nmi).
- That flight carried a specially blended high-density fuel, 183.5 tonnes of it, and just 21 passengers.

- Carried Space Shuttle orbiters across America on its back, as the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.
- Carried other aeroplanes inside itself — the Dreamlifter was rebuilt with a swollen fuselage to ferry Boeing 787 wings and fuselage barrels.
- Fought wildfires, dropping up to 24,000 US gallons of retardant as the Evergreen Supertanker.
- Carried a megawatt-class laser in its nose, as the YAL-1 Airborne Laser.
- Carried a 2.5 metre infrared telescope and flew with a hole open in its fuselage, as SOFIA.
The end of the line
- Boeing built 1,574 Boeing 747s across a production run of 54 years.
- The last one, a 747-8 Freighter, was handed to Atlas Air on 31 January 2023.
- Production ending is not the same as the aircraft disappearing. Freighters still carry a large share of the world’s outsize air cargo, and a handful of airlines still fly passenger 747s.
- Because the line is closed, every future presidential 747 has to come from an airframe that already exists.
