Air New Zealand's two 747-400 cabins: the original 380-seat Business and Pacific Economy layout, and the later refit seating 379 across Business Premier, Pacific Premium Economy and Pacific Economy.

Air New Zealand operated the 747-400 from 1990 to 2014, and the cabin changed substantially over those years — from a spacious two-class layout to a more segmented three-class refit.

The original 380-seat cabin

The first -400s carried 380 passengers in two classes:

  • 56 Business seats at 50-inch pitch.
  • 324 Pacific Economy seats at 34-inch pitch.

This made the early Air New Zealand jumbo a simple, comfortable long-haul workhorse built around the Pacific leisure market, with a big economy cabin on both decks.

The refit: Business Premier arrives

From the mid-2000s the -400s were progressively refurbished into a 379-seat three-class cabin:

  • 46 Business Premier full lie-flat suites with a visitor’s seat, power, a 10.4-inch screen and noise-cancelling headsets.
  • 39 Pacific Premium Economy seats with more pitch and legroom.
  • 294 Pacific Economy seats.

The premium-economy class was being rolled out across the airline’s Boeing 747 and 777 long-haul network — a bet on a middle cabin that has since become standard industry-wide.

Air New Zealand retired its final 747-400 in September 2014, ending a quarter-century with the type.
