ANA 747 seat maps

ANA flew 46 Boeing 747s, seating up to 569 on its domestic 747-400D and 287 on its long-haul 747-400 before retiring the type in 2014.

All Nippon Airways was the second pillar of the Japanese 747 phenomenon. It operated 46 of the type between 1979 and 2014 and, like JAL, used it as a high-frequency domestic airliner as well as a long-haul flagship. The two airlines between them made Japan the largest single market the 747 ever served.

The domestic Super Jumbo

ANA’s first 747SR arrived in 1979 and began flying Tokyo–Sapporo. The initial cabin carried 455–456 seats, but the airline pushed density further, reaching 528 seats (20 premium and 508 economy) and marketing the aircraft as the “Super Jumbo.” ANA described it as the first airliner capable of carrying more than 500 passengers in an all-economy layout — a record on a scheduled domestic service.

The 747-400D

The 747-400D took the concept to its limit at 569 seats: 27 “Super Seat Premium” seats and 542 in economy, with a further 84 economy seats on the upper deck. A 2002 experiment briefly flew two aircraft in an all-economy layout, and a later refit trimmed the premium cabin to 23 seats. The domestic 400Ds were the last 747s ANA flew, retiring on 31 March 2014.

Long-haul: from 367 to 287

On international routes ANA went the other way. Its three-class -400 began at 367 seats, was rebuilt as the 338-seat “Super Style” cabin in 1999 with an onboard bar, and finished as the “New Style” layout of 287 seats — only 10 First and 182 economy, a striking contrast with the 569-seat domestic version of the same aircraft.
