Delta's 747-400 cabin seated 376 in three classes — 48 lie-flat Delta One suites split across the nose and upper deck, 42 Comfort+ seats and 286 in the main cabin.

Delta flew the 747 in two widely separated eras, and the second one produced the cabin most people remember. After the airline’s five 747-100s proved too large for its 1970s network and were returned to Boeing, Delta stayed away from the jumbo for three decades — until the 2008 merger with Northwest Airlines brought sixteen 747-400s into the fleet.

One cabin, 376 seats

The inherited aircraft were refurbished into a three-class cabin seating 376:

  • 48 Delta One lie-flat suites — 34 in the nose on the main deck and 14 on the upper deck — with 82-inch flat beds.
  • 42 Comfort+ seats in a five-row block with extra pitch.
  • 286 Main Cabin seats at 3-4-3.

The split between nose and upper deck matters: Delta’s most premium seats were on both decks, and the upper-deck 2-2 cabin was the quietest space on the aircraft. The 3-4-3 main cabin was the standard 747-400 economy arrangement, ten abreast.

The end of the line

Delta retired its 747-400s in December 2017, the last US airline to do so, after the type had been steadily displaced by twin-engined aircraft on the same routes. Some final flying continued into January 2018 as farewell charters.

The airline preserves Ship 6301, the first 747-400 ever built, at the Delta Flight Museum in Atlanta — the same airframe that launched the variant now sitting as its American memorial.

Map note: Delta One had an 82-inch lie-flat bed, with the upper-deck cabin in a quiet 2-2 arrangement. Comfort+ added pitch in a five-row block, and the main cabin ran 3-4-3. Delta flew the -400 with this single documented layout after inheriting the fleet from Northwest in the 2008 merger.
