Boeing 747 memories

A small archive of attributed published 747 recollections, plus a private browser composer that previews and exports visitors' own stories for optional editorial review.

Behind the aircraft's specifications are the people who built it, worked aboard it and watched it change their lives. This archive begins with three documented recollections and gives you a way to prepare your own story for the editor.

Recollections from the published record

These are attributed summaries of real recollections published by Boeing, Cathay Pacific and NASA. Short excerpts retain the speaker’s words; the linked source contains the full account. They are separate from visitor drafts created below.

Darrell Marmion · Boeing engineer

A factory visit that became a career

Childhood visit in 1968; recollection published in 2022

Marmion recalled seeing the first 747 as a five-year-old while visiting his father’s workplace. His father, Hank, managed the 747 mock-up shop. That early visit and his father’s encouragement helped inspire Darrell’s own engineering career, including later work on the 747 programme.

Monica Tong · Cathay Pacific inflight service manager

Seeing the world with a larger crew

Three decades of cabin work, recalled in 2016

In Cathay Pacific’s passenger-747 farewell recollections, Tong described the aircraft as the route to her dream of travelling the world. She estimated that she had worked more than 1,000 747 flights. She particularly remembered the friendships created by larger crews and the time they spent together on longer routes.

Arvid C. Knutson · Shuttle Carrier Aircraft technician

A landing gentle enough to sleep through

Undated ferry-flight memory; NASA interview on 13 April 2012

Knutson recalled dozing aboard NASA 905 with a colleague during a ferry flight. He remembered a landing by pilot A. J. Roy so gentle that the rolling sound of the pavement was their main clue that they were on the ground. Knutson thought the destination was Palmdale; the transcript does not supply a flight date.

“We hadn’t even heard, it was so smooth, such a landing.”

How contributions reach the archive

Preview your draft and download a personal text copy whenever you want. If you choose to offer it for publication, confirm your rights and publication permission, then prepare the contribution file. Open the email draft to the editor, attach that file and any original photograph, review the message and send it yourself. The site does not send or publish a contribution automatically.

The editor checks accuracy, attribution, photo permission and consent before adding a story. Approximate dates are labelled as approximate, and unverified registrations are left unspecified. The publication consent covers this website and reasonable edits for clarity; ownership remains with the contributor or original rights holder.

The composer keeps draft text and photo previews only in the current page's memory. It does not create an account, store a draft in browser storage or upload a file. Download before leaving or refreshing. See contact details, the privacy policy and the terms of use.

Research the machine behind a memory through individual aircraft histories, or keep your own dated sightings in the spotting logbook.
